about

RIP Cake Shop! We just learned that their final show will be New Year's Eve. Thanks for having us there so many times.

In honor of the great venue's memory, here's a show we played there this summer on July 29th, 2016. NOTE: I just threw a tape recorder in the back of the room, this is a bootleg quality recording. Since our first show at Cake Shop in 2008, it has become increasingly apparent that the neighborhood isn't particularly interested in supporting a small, weird, basement club. I remember exiting the venue after we played that night and being shocked at the massive crowd in the streets-- like an unplanned block party for people who can afford $1000 sneakers.

Earlier that day, I had walked down the street to 56 Ludlow to look at John Cale's old loft a few blocks away from the venue. In 1965, Cale and Lou Reed worked on the beginnings of the Velvet Underground there. We covered VU's "Run Run Run" later that night.

This show ends with "Realistic Birthday Music." During the extended repetition of the lyric "You've heard this song before" that ends the song I tried to point individually at every single person gathered up front upon each repetition. It got more and more ridiculous and awkward, then funny, then awkward again. That's what I'm doing there in the photo in the cover art.

Thanks for all the memories, Cake Shop!
